More than fourteen months after voting to organize with Teamsters Local 231, a group of 34 workers at Petrogas have now voted to authorize a strike against their employer. The strike vote is in response to the slow pace of negotiations for a first contract. There are still countless issues left open in the negotiations, including Union access to the facility, the Union members’ right to refuse to cross a picket line, seniority, job bidding, and the disciplinary procedure.
“The frustration with management is real. These members deserve to be heard and not dismissed. The workers at Petrogas have waited far too long to get a contract and now is the time for Petrogas to come to the table with a serious offer. While we are hopeful an agreement can be reached during the remaining scheduled bargaining dates, these workers have sent a loud and clear message that they are willing to fight for what they deserve”, said Rich Ewing, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 231.
Virtual negotiations are set to resume September 6th, and in person negotiations are scheduled for September 28 and 29.
Founded in 1909, Teamsters Local 231 represents 2,300 working people in Whatcom, Skagit, Island and Snohomish County. www.231teamsters.org
