An Open Letter to Joshua Green Corporation CEO Stanley McCammon, from Teamsters Local 231 Secretary-Treasurer Rich Ewing

Dear Mr. McCammon,
In 2017 the Joshua Green Corporation was awarded the Heritage/Legacy Award at the Family Business Awards for demonstrating outstanding stewardship of legacy enterprises. This high honor was followed up by an interview with Seattle Business Magazine, in which you made the following quote:

“First of all, the family is very community minded, so when we make an investment, we think about the impact it has,” McCammon says. “More than investing in companies, we’re investing in employees who are paying mortgages and raising kids here.”

As a labor leader, that quote really appealed to me. After all, I feel the same way about what we do at Teamsters Local 231, which is to make life better for our members and their families. Even though your quote was originally published in December of 2017, which feels like a lifetime ago, I must now ask you: do you still stand by those principles today? I ask because of what is happening at Bellingham Cold Storage, which is part of the Joshua Green Corporation portfolio. On July 1, 2021, 110 hardworking Teamster members – men and women with families and mortgages – went out on strike for two weeks. They did not go on strike because of greed; rather, they were on strike because they want to take care of their families now and in the future. This means earning a living wage, having access to affordable healthcare, and being prepared for eventual retirement. However, BCS management has not shown an interest in investing in their employees in any of those categories.

“TRUST- Our Company is based on trust-between us and our family of Business Partners. We earn trust by doing what we say and saying what we do. We work with honesty and integrity, and we expect the same honesty and integrity from our Partners. Our long-term success is built on solid, trust-based relationships.”

The previous quote comes directly from your website. I am curious if you believe that Bellingham Cold Storage President, Doug Thomas, also adheres to your company values? I ask because after the two-week strike, the Union members made a good faith return to work, as Mr. Thomas had stated that he would come back to the table and bargain in good faith as well as “do right by our people.” The employees took this leap of faith believing that Mr. Thomas would stand by his word. This did not happen. Instead, Mr. Thomas gave the Union members yet another “Last, Best, and Final” offer. During negotiations, the BCS management team has committed several Unfair Labor Practices that include retaliating against Union workers for their protected concerted activity and bad faith bargaining, including supplying misinformation at the bargaining table. This is not remotely in keeping with your expressed principles when it comes to selecting companies to invest in.

Mr. McCammon, now is a special opportunity for you: You can step up, do the right thing, and live up to the principles that won that prestigious honor for Joshua Green Corporation in 2017. Or you can stand back and allow these hardworking men and women to suffer. I sincerely hope that you’ll make the right decision.
