A group of 18 drivers and mechanics working for Cadman Ready Mix at the Ferndale and Bellingham, Washington locations have voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining Teamsters Local 231. The election was then certified by the National Labor Relations Board on September 19, 2022, which means that negotiations can now begin on a first contract.

The vote came after a three-month organizing campaign spearheaded by Local 231 Organizer and Business Representative Kelsey Copps, who went to work organizing the group after they contacted Teamsters Local 231 hoping to achieve representation that would guarantee their rights on the job. The employees realized that the only way to secure the same wages, benefits, and working conditions enjoyed by their counterparts at other Cadman locations in the region is to be protected by a strong a Teamster contract.  

It was clear from the beginning that these workers were determined to put an end to being treated like substandard employees. The organizing drive was not easy, as Cadman launched a full-scale anti-union campaign designed to convince workers not to pursue their right to have a voice on the job. However, the workers stood strong and voted to have a seat at the bargaining table.

“We are honored to have these brave workers join our ranks,” said Teamsters Local 231 Secretary-Treasurer Rich Ewing, “Now that they have committed to becoming Teamsters, we commit to helping them achieve a contract that will provide them with a fair wage, good family medical coverage, and a secure retirement – the same benefits Cadman has already agreed to for their other employees in the region. They have already shown their fighting spirit through this organizing drive, and we know that fighting spirit will be just what we need to achieve a strong, fair contract that values the work they do every day.”
